A little something different for breakfast yesterd

A little something different for breakfast yesterday. I've been meaning to try my hand at shakshouka for a long time and was surprised at how easy it was. Traditional, not really, but it was delicious. The trick was covering the eggs and keeping an eye on them so they didn't get overcooked. I also decided a massive latke was a good way to use up old potatoes.

Second rifle has come and gone. @dschutt18 and I tagged up with mule deer does, and @waders.and.whiskey and Max were a pack animals helping both pack outs and providing morale support. Tons of fresh free range meat processed out for the family. I didn't see any elk during my trip, but knew they were there. I could smell them during several of my jaunts, but just couldn't quite make it happen. I'm debating on dropping mule deer altogether from my second rifle strategy but that will change the camp dynamic if I do. I feel like I haven't fully embraced my place in the West as a hunter if I don't spend some time learning and targeting these critters more directly.

As Denver gets buried in snow and I've got some time to reflect I anticipate getting some content out soon on my blog over the long weekend. I've already got my notes from the trip typed up, but there's definitely way more stories to tell.

We're back from our elk and mule deer second rifle

We're back from our elk and mule deer second rifle camp for the year, and while our coolers are a little heavier this was the shot that stole the week for me. I watched this little critter hunt and chase after mice and a blue grouse about the size of a soccer ball one night while waiting for deer to filter in below me. While its coat had already changed making him stick out during that evening, he went stealth mode not two days later when we got a few inches of fresh powder up in the hills above the Colorado river. What an absolute treat to watch this hunter work, with all the goofiness of a ferret, the ermine is a super rad wild little land shark.
